An amazing short and easy trek in Nepal that showcases best of Annapurna region without getting to higher elevation - Poonhill Ghorepani Trek

Poonhill Ghorepani Trek is an easy trek in Nepal that runs along the trails at the foothills of Annapurna Himalayan Range. Though it is an easy trek in Nepal, the rewards of the trek are so magnificent that the trek beats many longer and harder treks across the world. The trek is purely designed to entertain trekkers of every age and without previous trekking experiences. No issues of altitude sickness and no issue of consuming long time, the trek is ideal for beginners and veterans both.

Poonhill Ghorepani Trek primarily highlights the majestic views of Annapurna massif and its closest neighbors including Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri Himalayan Ranges with Mt. Fishtail always adorned in between. The trek also highlights amazing Gurung culture. Gurung is a tribal clan of Nepal known to the world as brave Gurkha warriors. They belong to the isolated mountains villages like Ghandruk and Ulleri, which are the prime highlights of the trek.

This easy trek in Nepal also highlights the pleasure of walking the woods of Annapurna Conservation Area Project where rare species of birds are frequently sighted. Moreover, the landscapes dominated by cascading falls, deep valleys and pure streams are worthwhile observing during the trek.

Enjoy the cordial Nepalese welcome in arrival terminals of the airport and drive to your designated hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Sightseeing tour of Kathmandu

Actually this day is a trek preparation day. As our team is preparing the required permits for Poonhill Ghorepani Trek; you will be taken to Kathmandu most beautiful locales where culture history and the heritage of the ancient town spills in every corner. Explore the biggest hub of Hinduism in Nepal Pashupatinath where travelers get to experience the important aspects of the religion. Stroll around Boudhanath, a large dome shaped stupa where Tibetan culture and Buddhism are seen at its best. Exploration of Kathmandu Durbar Square is an awesome experience as it takes you to Nepal’s one of the oldest architectural landmarks where local Newari culture also has been prospering for ages.

Day 03:: Drive to Pokhara 200km 7-8 hrs drive

Today, we drive 200 km along the snaky Prithwi Highway to Pokhara. The highway that most of the times runs above Himalayan Rivers offers an adventurous drive. Moreover, the local lifestyles in frequent highway towns and lush vegetation are interesting aspects to observe during the drive. Once, we reach Pokhara we check into our Hotel in Lakeside and set out to explore the tourist hub in town. Pokhara is the city decorated with lakes and panoramic Himalayan views. It is also the biggest adventurous hub of the country. The city is famous amongst trekkers because it is the starting point for Annapurna Region Treks.

Day 04:: Drive to Nayapul 1hr drive and trek to Ghandruk 2710m

Early morning we begin the journey. An hour long drive along narrow and twisted Baglung Highway brings us to Nayapul. We begin our trek from Nayapul. Gradually walking along gentle ups and downs and sometimes on the flat trail, we arrive to Kimche. It is a couple of hours trek to Kimche. Then the steep uphill trail along the stony steps for two hours brings us to Ghandruk. The walk towards Ghandruk offers various angle views of Mt. Fishtail. On reaching Ghandruk check into your teahouse. Ghandruk is the home to Gurung tribe; families of Gurkha warriors. In the evening explore to experience typical Gurung culture, their lifestyle and amazing hospitality

Day 05:: Trek to Ghorepani 3194m

Today we start early. Our trek most of the times goes through dense rhododendron woodlands of Annapurna Conservation Area Project. The trek continues uphill for a while and then stretches along the flat trail for an hour until we reach Tadapani. From Tadapani we continue to trek up and down along the dense woodlands towards Ghorepani. As we head closer to Ghorepani the dazzling views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Nilgiri Ranges become more wonderful. The view is even more widespread and fascinating from Deurali. Beyond Deurali, the last push on the ridgeline followed by pleasant downhill walk and very short uphill walk brings us to Ghorepani. Ghorepani is small village at the foothill of towering 8000m plus peaks. Ghorepani refers to horse water and hence we see plenty of horses in Ghorepani. Overnight in Ghorepani.

Day 06:: Early morning hike to Poonhill 3210m and trek back to Ulleri via Ghorepani

Today, we wake up before dawn and begin the trek towards Poonhill. An uphill walk before the dawn for 45 minutes brings us to Poonhill right before the sunrise. From Poonhill we shall witness the most beautiful sunrise of our life. The mountains glitter like gold in the beginning and slowly their color changes as the sun goes higher. As the sun sets high enough, the white walls almost 270 degrees sprawl right before our eyes. The view is amazing. Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Fishtail, Dhampus and many other Himalayan peaks loom high up in the sky rising from the base at green hills. Enjoy the morning here and trek down back to Ghorepani. Enjoy the breakfast in your teahouse and resume the trek. We trek downhill throughout the day and arrive to Ulleri for the overnight stay.

Day 07:: Trek to Hille and drive back to Pokhara

The last day of the trek is along the steep downhill stony steps all the way to Thirkhedunga. A short walk on the leveled trail brings us to Hille. We board the vehicle from Hille, which will drive us back to Pokhara. Explore around Pokhara and enjoy the evening strolling and partying in Lakeside

Day 08: Drive back to Kathmandu

Today we drive back to Kathmandu along Prithiwi Highway. Enjoy the drive. As we arrive to Kathmandu we will check into our hotel in the city. Evening on your own.

Day 09: Depart Kathmandu

  • Altitude Mountain sickness
AMS is the abbreviation for Acute Mountain sickness also termed as the High Altitude Sickness. AMS is one of the challenges that the trekkers/ climbers might face during their climb in the mountains. As you reach higher in the altitude the oxygen level gradually decreases. If a person tries to climb too quickly then there is a higher chance of getting AMS. The major symptoms of AMS is headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tiredness, difficulty in sleeping. However, AMS can be avoided by using some precautionary measures such as drinking plenty of water, eating enough food and walking in the steady pace. Our experienced guides who have been working in the Himalayas will help and instruct you for further measures.

Ecstatic Himalaya will provide a well-qualified and experienced guide who has a good knowledge about AMS as they can recognize the early symptoms and advise medications for instant relief. We have designed our trips in such a way that the clients get full acclimatization and proper rest. You will also be provided with a Gamow bag upon request at an additional charge which is considered a major gear to reduce the effect of AMS. In the worst case scenario, we shall arrange a rescue and evacuation using a helicopter whose cost should be covered by your travel insurance.

  • Acclimatization
We are experts at operating at high-altitude. Every trip we run has a realistic acclimatization programme. Our treks are designed to allow gradual height gain, spread over a number of days. There is no way of predicting who will suffer from altitude but, for the vast majority of people, a slow ascent to height will produce minimal effects. We can provide 'Gamow Bag' as a precautionary measure as per your request on hiring basis. Acclimatizing takes time and there are no safe shortcuts. All trips to altitudes in excess of 3,000 meters carry medicines essential to the treatment of altitude illness, and our leaders are trained to administer them and to know the symptoms.
  •

  • Physical Fitness
We strongly recommend our clients for consulting the doctor before planning your holidays. You should obtain professional advice from a travel clinic or your local GP about which vaccinations to have before you arrive in Nepal. Your doctor will advise current inoculation requirements. If a doctor has recommended against travel or indicated travel may be inconvenient then inform us of the details. On all trekking and exploratory trips technical experience is not required, hiking/camping experience is an advantage, but by far the most important thing is a positive attitude and a generous amount of determination. We strictly maintain hygiene foods on the trek. We carry extensive medical kits and, if the need should ever arise, we are able to evacuate seriously ill group members by helicopter. We run regular first aid courses for our all trekking guides and Sherpa helpers.
